Inside Mitchell Distillery

Where a Vision Sparked an Enduring Legacy

Pioneering Foundations

From Scotland’s rugged highlands to the sunburnt expanses of Southeastern Australia, Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell charted more than new frontiers—he charted a path for discovery, innovation, and spirit. It was his relentless curiosity that shaped the landscapes of New South Wales, forging roads across Sydney and the Hunter Valley, and mapping vast territories that expanded the possibilities of a young nation. At
Mitchell Distillery, we celebrate this pioneering heritage by embracing that same courageous spirit in each bottle we craft.

The Heart of Our Home

Embracing the Depth and Character of Mitchell, Queensland

Nestled in the Maranoa Region of Queensland, the township of Mitchell stands as a living testament to the resilience and warmth of rural Australia. Framed by the banks of the Maranoa River and traversed by the historic Warrego Highway, our distillery pays homage to the region’s storied past—where cattle and sheep grazing have long been the backbone of the local community. The culture here is vibrant yet unhurried, shaped by heritage-listed sites, the time-honoured artistry showcased at the Booringa Heritage Museum, the entrepreneurial legacy of Mitchell’s Cordial Factory, and the restorative allure of the Great Artesian Spa. From century-old council buildings to the welcoming spirit of the Mitchell library and art gallery, the area resonates with genuine hospitality and a love for tradition—qualities that weave themselves into every sip of our whiskey, gin, vodka, and other fine spirits.

Major Thomas Mitchell

From Survey to Settlement: The Making of Mitchell and Mitchell Downs

Sir Thomas Mitchell reached the Maranoa River on 17 May 1846 at what is now Mitchell’s Camp, about 22 miles north of the town of Mitchell, and was joined by Edmund Kennedy and the rest of his party on 1 June; while Aboriginal people had long lived along the river, their expedition marked the first recorded arrival of white explorers in the area. Their surveying spurred rapid pastoral settlement, with multiple runs consolidated into Mitchell Downs—purchased by Edward Flood and Samuel Gordon in 1860 and sold to T.S. Mort and T.W. Smart in 1862—eventually spanning 904½ square miles and about 80 miles along both banks of the Maranoa before government resumptions from 1885 onward reduced it to its present size. The town of Mitchell later formed near the Mitchell Downs head station, with 640 acres resumed in 1869 on the river’s west bank to establish the Mitchell Town Reserve.

A Signature Symbol

The Pink Cockatoo’s Timeless Grace

High above the sprawling Queensland horizon soars our inspiration—the radiant pink cockatoo, also known as Major Mitchell’s cockatoo. With its soft white and salmon-hued plumage crowned by a brilliant red and yellow crest, it brings color and life to the dusty Australian outback. This captivating bird—once honored by Sir Thomas Mitchell himself—embodies both beauty and resilience, qualities we strive to capture in our distillery. Much like these graceful cockatoos, we celebrate our vibrant origins and the freedom to explore every nuance of flavor.

MITCHELL Sunset: A Distillery's Embrace

As the day gracefully bows out in Mitchell, Queensland, the vast Maranoa sky ignites with a breathtaking display of oranges, purples, and deep reds. The sun dips below the horizon, casting long, warm shadows across the dry plains, painting the landscape in hues that stir the soul. In the midst of this natural spectacle, the Mitchell Distillery, a beacon of local craft and spirit, stands silhouetted against the fading light. Its presence in this expansive, rugged region speaks to the heart of the Maranoa—a place where resilience and beauty converge, much like the distilling process itself, transforming the raw elements of the land into something refined and remarkable under the watchful eye of a magnificent Queensland sunset.
